but that's beyond this guide's scope since it'll usually be around day 7-9 before you move into the Old Woods, anyhow, and if you've survived to reach hideout 3, you probably have a firm grasp on gameplay fundamentals anyhow. Hideout 3 is when mean things like huge dogs and chompers become common sights. Some dogs and the occasional savage at Hideout 1, some savages and occasionally a huge dog at Hideout 2. Hideout 3 is the first hideout where things can get messy, and by that point you have so many tools to deal with the monsters that it's not a big deal.Įspecially in Hideout 1 and Hideout 2, you aren't going to face much in the way of dangerous monsters. but honestly, it's not really necessary for the first week of the game. You can barricade windows or doors in other rooms. As long as you see the enemies coming, you have plenty of time to ambush them as they try to hop into the room. I have one window barricaded, and the other left open to allow easy movement into and out of the room. Identify where you want to be in the room, barricade any extra exits you can't easily monitor, and maybe drag some furniture in if there's a hole you can't repair.Īs you can see, I actually have three exits in this room, but the third exit is barricaded with two large pieces of furniture, while the weaker barricade has a trap to limit movement. Ideally, you should be able to monitor both exits from a single position, and should have at least some room for evasion. In general, you should put both lamps into a single room and ensure you have at least two exits. This effect stacks with the buff from eating food, so combining the two will often let you cross an entire zone on one stamina meter. If you're trying to cover large distances, sticking near the trails will make things more efficient. Trails will dramatically lessen your stamina consumption while running. This will make inventory management a lot less painful! Press SHIFT to move an entire stack of something from one inventory to the next (a container you're looting to your inventory, or your inventory to your workbench for example.) Press CTRL to move a single item from a stack from one inventory to another.

I'm not going to cover the basics, just some things that aren't described well. I do advise at least trying to survive the first few days without outside help, though - part of the fun is learning what to do! For those that don't want to go through that. I think Darkwood is generally really good about providing proper feedback (you can typically understand why you failed pretty easily), but having a quick-start guide doesn't hurt. Some of us aren't really fond of dying to things we don't understand or otherwise having a cruddy experience, though.

Darkwood claims it won't hold your hand, and for the most part that's true.
